When closed, the valve prevents liquid waste from entering the solid waste stream.

Solid waste drops through its dedicated opening into a removable bin positioned below the toilet bowl. Liquid waste flows through a separate opening connected to a liquid waste tank or system disposed below the bowl level. Valve arrangements in communication with the liquid waste opening control flow from the toilet to the storage or treatment system.

A solid waste valve in the open position receives solid waste from the bowl. The prepositioned waste valve arrangement remains in the closed position to block liquid flow into the solid waste system. When the user switches to liquid waste elimination, the arrangement reverses: the solid valve closes while liquid flow to the dedicated tank enables. A stabilizing device fixed to the packaging assists with proper valve positioning during installation.

Thetford BV, a Dutch company specializing in sanitation technology for recreational vehicles, boats, and stationary installations, developed this separation toilet conversion system. Multiple inventors contributed to the design: Jacco Van Beek, Dennis Doove, Tom Kieboom, Leendert Jan Antoon Jansen, Harm De Rooij, and Victor Luijk.
