This application covers a management system for table games in a gaming house, combining image analysis of the table with instrumented substitute currency, the chips themselves, to detect fraud. The applicant is Angel Group, the Japanese manufacturer of playing cards and casino equipment.

The Problem

Casinos have watched their tables for as long as there have been tables. Monitoring cameras cover the floor, and staff review footage to detect cheating in play and, importantly, irregularities in the collection and payment of chips that do not match the recorded result of a hand.

Camera surveillance has a structural weakness though: it depends on someone watching, or on an analyst reviewing footage after suspicion has already arisen. It is good at confirming what happened and poor at noticing that something is happening.

Automated analysis helps but has its own limits. Determining the number or total value of bet chips from an image is hard, because chips are stacked and the value is encoded in colours that overlap and obscure one another. That difficulty led to a separate line of development: attaching an RFID tag to each chip so the table can read what is on it directly.

Earlier work in the family, referenced as PCT/JP2015/000171, monitored fraud by image analysis of chip movement, determining whether chips were collected or paid out in accordance with the win or loss result. That establishes the approach; the difficulty is the reliability of the underlying measurement.

The fraud patterns this targets are the ones native to table games rather than to card play: chips added to a winning bet after the outcome is known, payouts that do not match the wager, chips removed from a losing bet before collection. Each is a discrepancy between the recorded result and the chip movement, detectable automatically once both are measured reliably.

The sole named inventor is Yasushi Shigeta, the company’s chairman, who appears on a very large number of its filings.

The application sits in a long divisional chain: from Australian application 2022200450, itself a divisional of 2020213356, itself a divisional of 2016302618, the national phase of PCT/JP2016/072360, claiming priority from four Japanese applications filed between August 2015 and February 2016.

Why It Matters

Casino surveillance is a well developed field with an unusual economic structure. Losses from table fraud are difficult to quantify precisely because the undetected portion is by definition unknown, which makes the case for automated detection partly a case about the size of a problem nobody can measure.
